It is always interesting to watch the interweaving of film culture and video games. Thinking of James Bond and Austin Powers brings to mind the Evil Genius comet that hit the industry with unexpected force in 2004. The first part was not a masterpiece, but owes its popularity to the charm of the setting, elements of Dungeon Keeper, Theme Hospital and interspersed with the tower defense genre.
The design of Evil Genius at the beginning of the 2000s was invented by programmer and chess player Demis Hassabis, later the founder of DeepMind, an artificial intelligence company. Despite its success, the game did not lead Elixir Studios into the world of big money. The studio was closed in 2005 and the publisher Rebellion took up the continuation a decade and a half later.
The idea of Evil Genius 2 is devilishly simple. The player builds a 1960s spy movie-style variation of Dungeon Keeper’s base to carry out their criminal plans for global domination. The role of the ruler of the dungeons is played by a supervillain. On the one hand, we have the construction and arrangement of premises, managing finances and hiring minions, and on the other, managing events on a world map divided into regions for the extraction of money and resources.
The game begins with the choice of one of four anti-heroes: the versatile maniac Maximilian, the security general Red Ivan, the genius of science Zalik and the scout Emma. Each has three abilities (two active and passive) and a separate biography. The style of play differs in the specialization and the unique doomsday machine that you get to know in the campaign. In practice, the gameplay is similar.

Any self-respecting madman suffering from megalomania loves uninhabited islands. Our lair is located in a tropical paradise on several floors, including underground sectors. It attracts tourists with the presence of a casino, but the core of the business is not tables and slot machines.

The basis of any base is the interior. Space is a scarce resource and is increasing slowly. The main thing here is the vault with money, which is desirable to be located away from the entrances. Also important is the control center with computerized consoles, equipped with satellite dishes and allowing access to more regions of the world to create a Lihodei network. Finally, all staff quarters (barracks, dining room, recreation room, classroom, infirmary) should be equipped with special devices and, if desired, decorative items should be placed.
Management principles must meet not only the criteria of economic efficiency, but also safety. The base will eventually be attacked by agents, interrogators and soldiers, so it is important to provide a defense system with cameras, traps, narrow corridors and guard posts.

You can’t directly control minions. They take on tasks on their own, but in return demand that their meager needs of sleep, food, and rest be met. Attention can also be paid to devotion. A disloyal worker will quickly run away, but it’s not a big deal – we’ll hire a new one.
Progress in Evil Genius 2 is tied to the research tree, which unlocks new options on the strategy map, devices, and buffs minions.
The organization of the world in Evil Genius 2
The world is divided into regions belonging to different factions. In each, you can create villainous branches, earn gold and complete different types of missions, irrevocably sending servants. Everything related to the tactical map is done with much less care. The minions don’t do anything interesting here, and the most exciting thing is to see the percentage of manipulation completed.
The game cycle is a continuous transition from the construction part to the strategic part in order to achieve goals. There will be no shortage of tasks, their list is constantly updated.
The growth of the area of the premises and the abundance of units must be balanced with the number of minions. This means that power generators increase at the same time as technicians, enforcers must be proportional to the frequency of attacks, and the number of relays increases the impact on the world. The two cards are closely related, and actions in one place are reflected in the other.

Evil Genius 2 has a user-friendly interface. At the bottom of the screen is the taskbar, where you can find everything you need in a couple of clicks and get comprehensive information about what is happening. Pleases and a separate line with notifications and warnings – a quick click takes you to the place of the event. Despite the mass of events taking place on the screen, conducting a chaotic orchestra is easy. In addition, by clicking on the lanky, you can get fun information about his hobbies and employment at a particular moment.
Aesthetics suggests a certain unpretentiousness of the gameplay, but you should not be deceived. The game constantly throws up surprises that require an immediate response, otherwise everything will end in failure. Rebellion did a great job with the decor and atmosphere. In a simplified cartoon style, it is revealed by a mass of details that you do not immediately pay attention to.
Evil Genius 2 parodies everything you know about supervillains and the movies they come from. There is a lot of good humor, funny animations, backgrounds, workplaces and the appearance of the characters that make the game more enjoyable. But little work was done on the dialogues, the lines between the characters are rather a forced necessity.
It is almost impossible to find fault with the soundtrack and the audiovisual layer. The inspiration was clearly the music from the Bond films of the times of Sean Connery and Roger Moore.

The game has obvious balance issues. For example, the original generators produce criminally little energy, so you have to fill the room with devices that will soon be no longer needed. It is strange to see things like mega-safes worth 15 thousand and containing 10 thousand local money.
The duration of the passage, depending on your style of play varies, but it is unlikely to take less than 30 hours.
Evil Genius 2 cannot escape comparison with the original. And it is largely not in favor of continuing. There is a small amount of innovation here, since Rebillion decided not to risk it and stick to the first part as much as possible. Simpler mechanics are also striking, as if the developers considered that the main audience is mobile gamers.
Conclusion
Evil Genius 2 was conceived as a tribute to the classic strategy with indirect control with more attractive graphics. But other innovations more primitivize the gameplay.
This is a good continuation of a good game with its own charm. It doesn’t try to break the formula of the original and tries to be fun with base development and scripted side quests. But the latter begin to quickly repeat themselves and get bored, turning the game into a routine.
Fans of the first part would obviously be happy with more significant changes, and some will be furious with stupid agents, fiddling with the world map, the uselessness of a number of improvements and traps, and, most importantly, slow gameplay. And the acceleration button does not save the broken formula.
Pros
- Nice graphics and music
